ZEUS
GREEK KING OF THE GODS
Zeus was one of three sons born to Titans Cronus and Rhea, respectively the gods of Time and the Earth. When he was a baby, Zeus was nearly eaten by his father, but was saved by his mother - who switched him out with a rock, angering Cronus - and taken to live with a magical goat named Almathea. There he lived until he was strong enough to rise up and overthrow Cronus and become ruler of Olympus, leaving Cronus to rot in Tartarus for all eternity.
As a person, Zeus could be described as the playboy type, almost never sharing a bed with his wife and sister, Hera. Arguably ninety percent of the mythology we know today is because of Zeus’ numerous affairs.
Today, though, Zeus is living in New Olympus and working as an electrician - kind of ironic for a god of lightning, don’t you think?

HADES
GREEK GOD OF THE DEAD
Hades has been recorded in the mythos as being both the youngest and the eldest of Cronus and Rhea’s male offspring - here on Gods of Old, we’re going with the latter, to make things easier.
Hades’ history starts with - you guessed it - becoming a midnight snack for his father. Sometime later, Hades and his other siblings were rescued by Zeus, and the brothers drew lots to see who would rule which domain - sky, sea, and Underworld.
Even later, Hades kidnapped and married his niece (you read that exactly right) Persephone, the goddess of spring and the daughter of his sister Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. He made an agreement with her, that she was allowed to stay on earth for half the time, whereas the other half must be spent with him in the Underworld.
Nowadays, since getting kicked from the Underworld by his mother, he’s been working on earth as a coroner in New Olympus.

APHRODITE
GREEK GODDESS OF LOVE AND DESIRE
Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus and Dione, lover of Ares, the god of war, and mother to Eros, the god of sensual love and desire - AKA Cupid. One myth explains how she was born from sea foam - but it’s very graphic so let’s just say that it involves Kronos castrating Ouranos and throwing his testicles into the ocean and she was born from sea foam. Enough said.
Nowadays, she owns a brothel called The Venus Flytrap, and is honestly not even bothered by her fate.

ATHENA
GODDESS OF WISDOM, WAR STRATEGY, WEAVING AND OTHER CRAFTS
To kick things off, Athena’s birth makes total sense as to why she’s the goddess of wisdom. She was born from Zeus’ forehead, fully-grown and dressed in armour. She’s also contested with Poseidon - who I think is her uncle based on the fact that she’s a progeny of Zeus? - on who would rule Athens, the city thought to be named for her. Obviously she won, but Poseidon created the first horse and she the first olive tree. Hesiod states that Metis (the goddess of wise counsel - was Zeus’ wife before Hera, and undo the advice of his grandparents Gaia (Mother Earth, to make things simpler) and Ouranos (Father Sky, again to simplify stuff), tricked a Métis and ate her as she was about to give birth. So instead, Zeus got a splitting headache - puns! Whee! - and gave birth to Athena himself.
Sometime later, she bumped into a braggart of a young woman - cough Arachne cough - and challenged her to a weaving contest. Spoilers, she lost. And she got so pissed she turned Arachne into a spooky spider so she could spend the rest of her life weaving -that right there is some Charlotte’s Web type shit.

APOLLO
GREEK GOD OF THE SUN, MUSIC AND POETRY
Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, and has a twin sister, the chaste huntress Artemis. Seen as the most beautiful god and the ideal of the kouros (a beardless, athletic youth), Apollo is considered to be the most Greek of all gods. Apollo is a god of music, truth and prophecy, healing, the sun and light, plague, poetry, and more. He is the son of Zeus and Leto, and is twin brother to the chaste huntress Artemis. Not only is he the director of the muses’ choir, he’s also a skilled archer that has never missed a shot and one of the gods that presided over divine law, aside from his father Zeus, his aunt Demeter, and Themis.

PERSEPHONE
GODDESS OF SPRING; QUEEN OF THE UNDERWORLD
Persephone (or Proserpina in the Roman mythos) has an interesting history, almost as interesting as that of her uncle and husband, Hades. For starters, she was kidnapped by Hades - an event known as ‘The Rape of Persephone’ - who made a deal with his sister and Persephone’s mother, Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. The deal - which was actually proposed by Zeus - was that Persephone could divide her time between the Underworld and the Earth, spending four months with Hades during the winter and eight months with her mother during spring, summer and fall. This was henceforth known as Demeter’s grief period, where the weather would get colder and winter would come. This was also used to explain how crops grew in the spring.

HEPHAESTUS
GREEK GOD OF FIRE, BLACKSMITHS, AND METALWORKING
Hephaestus is the Greek god of fire, metalworking, and blacksmiths. He is yet another legitimate child Zeus and Hera and is married to Aphrodite - they were wed by Zeus in to prevent a war of the gods fighting for her hand. He was a god of blacksmiths, forging all of the weapons for Olympus. Athena’s ægis? Made by Hephaestus. Eros’ arrows? Made by Hephaestus. Aphrodite's golden girdle? Apollo's chariot? Hades' helm of darkness? The thrones on Olympus? Zeus’ thunderbolts!? All. Hephaestus. Hell, he even made his own robotic helpers. Though described as being ugly and living under a volcano, Hephaestus proved himself quite useful by making weapons (and modes of transportation) for the gods. In a way, you could say he’s a sort of shadow worker. Without him, the gods of Olympus would have nowhere to sit, nothing to wear and no way to get around from place to place (see: Apollo’s chariot).

POSEIDON
GREEK GOD OF THE SEA, EARTHQUAKES AND HORSES
Poseidon was an important god. Poseidon was the Lord of the Sea. He was one of the 12 Olympians who made up the council of the gods.
Even with having two powerful brothers, Poseidon was not the jealous type when it came to them or their power. He did not want to be in charge of the Underworld. And he certainly did not want all the responsibility that Zeus had shouldered. He was very happy being Lord of the Sea, not wanting to be commander of the skies or Underworld.
The job suited him perfectly. Poseidon had deep blue eyes and streaming green hair. He had a roaring laugh. He was moody and restless and powerful. He could magically make an island appear, or a tidal wave cover the shoreline, or send a wave to suck you right off the beach. All it took was a wave of his hand!
Even though the people who lived further inland were not exactly worried about Poseidon, the ancient Greeks who lived along the coastline were terrified of him. So terrified, in fact, that they build temples to honor him. They brought gifts every day. Sometimes the gifts made Poseidon happy, and the water was calm and sparkling. Sometimes the gifts did not make him happy, and a terrible storm would break over the land. Therefore, the people tried very hard to keep Poseidon emotionally sated.
Like most of the gods - not counting virgin goddesses and Hera, of course - Poseidon had many lovers. He especially loved his main wife, Amphitrite, who was not at all jealous of the other women in his world. That was unusual, and Poseidon was grateful for it. Amphitrite was the only wife who lived under the sea and made her home in their fabulous underwater palace.
Just like Hades, Poseidon owned a huge mansion on Mount Olympus, but he only stayed there if he needed to attend a meeting of the divine council, comprised of him and the other 11 gods. Otherwise, he stayed in his underwater palace. It was a beautiful place. The palace itself was decorated Greek columns and colorful seaweed and white sand and glowing jewels and shimmering shells and magical amber, with fish swimming in and out in every color of the rainbow. At night, glow worms kept every corner bathed in soft light. It was a peaceful, colorful place. There was nothing else like it in the world. As moody and wild in nature as he might be, Poseidon always calmed when he came home to his beautiful palace and his beloved Amphitrite.
These days, he enjoys work as a marine biologist, working alongside Séraphine Lupien. As a bonus, he retained his ability to speak to sea creatures. His house is decorated in much the same manner as his palace, to make it more like home.

DIONYSUS
GREEK GOD OF WINE AND FESTIVITIES
Please note before anything else, Dionysus’ kids MUST be at least 18 years old. That is the legal drinking age in Greece, where this is based.
Dionysus - known as Bacchus in Roman mythology - was the god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity, madness and frenzy. He was depicted as either an older, bearded god or a younger man with flowing locks. His symbols include a pine-cone tipped staff called the thyrsos, a drinking cup and an ivy crown. He was usually depicted as being surrounded by accompanied by a troop of Satyrs and Mainades, his wild female devotees - fangirls, if you will.
Dionysos was born to Zeus and Semele, princess of the city of Thebes. While Semele still carried Dionysus in her womb, a jealous Hera (seriously, woman, pull yourself together) tricked her into asking Zeus to appear in his divine form. Unfortunately for Semele, he had to do as he was asked and she was burnt up by the heat coming from his lightning bolts. He did manage to save Dionysus, carrying him to term after being seen up in his thigh.
Nowadays, Dionysus is a vintner - fitting for a god of wine.

HERA
QUEEN OF THE GODS; GODDESS OF MARRIAGE AND CHILDBIRTH
The first and most important thing to know about Hera is that, if you cross her, she will wreck your shit. That being said, the goddess of marriage and childbirth is overall a nice person - at least, that’s her personal opinion. For eons, she’s tolerated her husband’s trysts, though she has cursed quite a few of his consorts - Echo for example. Just don’t pair her with Aphrodite, they’d be able to wreck your marriage and make you hate your partner.
Being that Hera is the goddess of marriage, she’s unlikely to have had any trysts of her own - with marriage comes loyalty, and she’s extremely loyal to Zeus, despite his many shortcomings.

ARES
GREEK GOD OF WAR
Ares is is the god of war, one of the twelve Olympian gods, and one of the only legitimate children of Zeus and Hera. He represents the more violent, physical, and passionate aspects of war, whereas his counterpart, Athena, represents the more strategic aspects, as well as generalship, as the goddess of intelligence.
Ares embodies the physical aggression necessary for success in battle, however the Greeks were decidedly ambivalent toward him because he possessed a dangerous, overwhelming force that was his insatiable lust for battle.
Even as a war god, Ares is well-known as the lover of Aphrodite, wife to Hephaestus. Though Ares generally plays a limited role in literature, he typically is put in humiliating situations when he does appear. One example is a famous story of Ares and Aphrodite being exposed to ridicule by the other gods after Hephaestus catches them together - naked, of course - using a device of his own creation.

ARTEMIS
SISTER TO APOLLO; VIRGIN GODDESS OF THE HUNT AND THE MOON
Artemis was Apollo's opposite. Her brother could be warm and loving. But Artemis was not like that. She adored her dogs. She loved her twin brother. She loved her Mom. She respected her Dad. She even liked most of her half-siblings. But to others, Artemis was cold and pitiless.
Artemis was a private goddess. There are not many myths about Artemis because not many Greek storytellers had the courage to tell tales about her. Her anger and her arrows were swift. She absolutely, positively, no question about it, resented anyone who intruded upon her, or spied upon her, especially any man. Artemis had swore never to marry. She never did.
